Student answer (Band 6.0)

Most people believe that in all levels of academic, being primary through to tertiary, most time is spent on gaining knowledge on facts and not much studying practical skills. I believe teachers spent a lot of time teaching student on facts rather than practical skills and I agree to this statement.

I will discuss this easy and explain my perspectives.

Firstly, education is a very important key in peoples lives because it is the way to their future life. talking about spending time on facts academically through primary to universities without practical is something obvious because students should be allowed to practice everything they have been taught in class, whether being a nursing student, engineering or any other student, this will lead you to practice confidently in your future career.

Secondly, when students spend a lot of time learning the facts, they will be knowledgeable in only the classroom material but may not have the experience when they go on the field which will be something that will prevent them from being hired when they are employed.

I agree that students spend much time learning the fact which will not help them in the near future when they are applying for jobs.

I believe that after every class any practical that is involved should be taught seriously by the teachers and students should put all their efforts during the practical section, this will prepare them for their future carrier.

I had an experience when I was in the nurses training college, where the students couldn't have access to practice things we were taught in the classroom and this really affected us after completion. Because you get to the field and you are asked to bring kidney dish or artery forceps, you wouldn't know. Although you have been taught but you don't know how it looks like.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of practical skills. The ideas are relevant, particularly the personal anecdote regarding nursing training, which effectively illustrates the argument. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the point about employability is mentioned in both the second and third paragraphs without significant expansion. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the counter-argument or provide more nuanced examples of how practical skills could be integrated into different levels of education, rather than restating the same point about job readiness.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to signal your points. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by awkward phrasing and repetitive sentence structures. Some transitions between sentences feel mechanical, and the paragraphing is inconsistent, with some very short paragraphs that disrupt the flow of the argument. Improving the use of referencing (e.g., using 'this' or 'these' more effectively to link back to previous ideas) would help the essay read more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to express your ideas, such as 'tertiary', 'career', and 'employability'. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'discuss this easy' (essay), 'future carrier' (career), and 'practice things' (perform practical tasks). These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit the score. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and avoid repeating basic vocabulary like 'facts' and 'practical skills' too frequently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Common issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'teachers spent' instead of 'teachers spend'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'being primary through to tertiary'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some sentences being run-on or lacking necessary commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors means that the grammar is not yet at a level where complex structures are used with consistent accuracy.
