Student answer (Band 6.0)

A large number of individuals believe that the educational institutions spent most time for a student to understand theoretical facts instead of giving them enough time to be comfortable with practical skills. I strongly agree with this statement and my essay aims discussing reasons behind my answer.

On the one hand, the most prominent point is that nowadays everybody has their focus on grasping more and more knowledge on facts. This is happening because even higher authorities are prioritizing written answers more in exam. To state an example, while I was in my school we were getting 70% marks for written exam and only 30% for practical which is not even half of the other one. it has been stayed the same until now.

On the other hand, due to the time pressure students may ignore having a good experience on practical skills. To elaborate on it, learners have various distinct subjects that they are needed to study which doesn't allow them to have enough time for practicals. Usually, they only have 2 classes of practical in a week due to their tight schedule. Moreover, it is also essential that they should focus on their physical and mental health which can pave a path for them to have more occupied schedule. After this, they have no room left for developing more skills.

In conclusion, although theory subjects are important for growth of students, I think practical skills should also be given same consideration which can result in proper growth of a learner.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on written exams and the time constraints students face. However, the development is somewhat limited. The example provided about school marks is personal and relevant, but the argument could be extended further by discussing the long-term consequences of this imbalance. The conclusion is brief and could be more impactful by summarising the main points more effectively. Overall, the response covers the requirements of the task well, but the depth of analysis is at a mid-level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'To state an example', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the sentence 'it has been stayed the same until now' lacks a clear cohesive link to the previous sentence. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression of ideas within the second paragraph is slightly disjointed due to the sudden mention of physical and mental health, which is not fully integrated into the main argument about practical skills.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'prominent point' and 'pave a path'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and awkward phrasing, such as 'educational institutions spent most time' (should be 'spend most of their time') and 'occupied schedule' (should be 'busy' or 'demanding schedule'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'my essay aims discussing' (should be 'aims to discuss'), 'they are needed to study' (should be 'they need to study'), and 'should also be given same consideration' (missing an article). Subject-verb agreement and tense usage are inconsistent, such as 'it has been stayed the same'. These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a lack of control over more complex grammatical forms.
