IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that in all levels of education, from primary schools to universities, too much time is spent on learning facts and not enough on learning practical skills.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Practical skills have greater significance because theory limit students upto learning face. In schools educators are only pushed to read and learn facts of different subjects like mathametics and history. Reasons behind this statement will be explained in the upcoming paragraphs.

There are different domains such as maths, science, phisics, and chemistry whic involves both learning facts and actual implementation but schools highlight theory and they do not show them actual experiments with chemical in a lab which is a major reason of lack of practical knowledge. Thus, students in universities or on internships do not know how to actually perform the tasks which they were studying in schools as they do not get chance to perform under the guidance of experts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which severely impacts the ability to develop ideas. While you introduce the topic and state a position, the argument is underdeveloped and lacks the necessary depth and supporting examples required for a Task 2 essay. The response stops abruptly after only two short paragraphs, failing to address the prompt fully or provide a conclusion. To improve, you must expand your arguments with specific examples and ensure you meet the minimum word count to allow for a full discussion of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay shows a basic attempt at paragraphing, but the progression of ideas is limited by the brevity of the text. You use some cohesive devices like 'Thus' and 'There are', but the overall structure is fragmented. The lack of a clear introduction, body, and conclusion makes the flow of the argument difficult to follow. To achieve a higher band, focus on using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') and ensure each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that contributes to a logical, well-organized argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication but lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. There are several spelling errors, such as 'mathametics', 'phisics', and 'whic', which detract from the quality of the writing. You rely on simple, repetitive phrasing like 'learning facts' and 'actual implementation'. To improve, try to incorporate more academic collocations and precise terminology related to education and skill acquisition. Proofreading for spelling accuracy is also essential to avoid unnecessary errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'theory limit students upto learning face' is grammatically incorrect and confusing. There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring that your verb tenses and word forms are accurate. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you move toward a higher band score.
