Student answer (Band 8.0)
It has been debated that theoretical knowledge is given more significance as opposed to practical skills training throughout schooling years of children, ranging from primary to universities. This essay completely agrees with the argument. It will initially highlight the time spent on outdated literature emphasized during factual lectures. Later, it will discuss examination patterns that favor pre-learned knowledge over vocational skills.
Firstly, most of the curriculum preached to children comes from textbooks that were published up to a decade ago. Consequently, the content of such books holds little practical value in today's fast-paced market. As a result, students spend a major chunk of their educational time on understanding irrelevant data, while the current technology rapidly advances. This can be perhaps best demonstrated by computer books published in Pakistan for sixth-grade students, where emphasis is placed on antique technology such as floppy disks and USB, rather than encouraging hands-on skills like coding and networks.
Secondly, the module based systems currently being followed are structured around three monthly paper-based tests. Neither does this allow room for experimentation, nor are they assessed for practical growth and evaluation of skills. Stemming from this, graduates are excellent in data retention and recall based memory, however, suffer with application of that knowledge in a hands-on manner. To illustrate, I remember clearing the online pre-course Advanced Life Support MCQ test, and still not understanding the basics of CPR. It was only when I had a practical demonstration followed by a simulation test, that I was able to get confident in CPR.
In light of the above, it is logical to advocate for a refined educational methodology that prefers teaching practical aspects of topics, as opposed to theoretical. Theoretical knowledge alone not only provides outdated information, but also hinders opportunities to compete in an exponentially growing global market.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses the prompt by taking a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments. The introduction outlines the essay's scope, and the body paragraphs provide specific examples, such as the curriculum in Pakistan and the personal anecdote regarding CPR training. The ideas are well-developed and logically extended, demonstrating a strong understanding of the topic. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces the initial stance. The response is balanced and directly answers the question posed, meeting all requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In light of the above'. The use of referencing is generally effective, and the paragraphing is appropriate. While some cohesive devices are standard, they are used accurately and contribute to the overall flow of the argument. The structure is coherent, allowing the reader to follow the writer's line of reasoning without difficulty.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The writer demonstrates a good range of topic-specific language, such as 'theoretical knowledge', 'vocational skills', 'fast-paced market', and 'educational methodology'. There is an attempt to use less common items, and the word choices are generally precise. While there are no major errors in word choice or collocation that impede meaning, the range could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band. Overall, the lexical resource is strong and supports the clarity of the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures and subordinate clauses ('Neither does this allow room for experimentation, nor are they assessed...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and the punctuation is used correctly. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'schooling years of children' (which could be more naturally phrased) and 'recall based memory' (which should be hyphenated), but these do not affect communication. The control over grammar is consistent throughout the text.
