Student answer (Band 8.0)
Many people argue that education systems, from primary schools to universities, focus too heavily on memorising facts rather than developing practical skills. I largely agree with this view, as modern learners need abilities that can be applied in real‑life situations rather than simply recalling information.
To begin with, students at all levels are often required to learn large amounts of theoretical content, such as historical dates, scientific definitions, or mathematical formulas. While such knowledge is useful, it does not always prepare learners for real challenges outside the classroom. For example, many university graduates struggle with basic tasks like writing professional emails, managing finances, or communicating effectively in the workplace. This shows that factual knowledge alone is not enough for success in today’s competitive world.
Furthermore, practical skills encourage creativity, problem‑solving, and independent thinking. When students participate in hands‑on activities—such as experiments, group projects, or internships—they learn how to apply concepts in meaningful ways. These experiences help them understand the relevance of what they study and build confidence in their abilities. In contrast, excessive focus on memorisation can make learning passive and reduce motivation.
However, it is important to acknowledge that factual knowledge still plays a vital role in education. Students need a strong foundation of information before they can apply it practically. Therefore, the issue is not about removing facts entirely, but rather achieving a better balance between theory and practice.
In conclusion, although learning facts is essential, I believe that education systems should devote more time to developing practical skills. This approach would better prepare students for real‑world situations and equip them with the abilities needed for personal and professional success.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with relevant examples provided, such as university graduates lacking professional communication skills. You also demonstrate a balanced perspective by acknowledging the role of factual knowledge in the fourth paragraph, which adds depth to your argument. The conclusion effectively summarises your stance and reinforces the main points. The response is well-structured and directly answers the prompt, showing a good understanding of the requirements for this task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', 'In contrast', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is logical and appropriate, with each section serving a distinct purpose in the overall structure. The referencing is clear, and the flow of information is natural, making the essay easy to follow from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. You use some less common items effectively, such as 'theoretical content', 'hands-on activities', and 'passive', which fit the context well. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. While the vocabulary is accurate and appropriate for the task, incorporating a few more sophisticated or academic collocations could elevate the response further. Overall, the lexical range is strong and supports your arguments clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'While such knowledge is useful, it does not always prepare learners...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is consistent. You successfully integrate different structures to express your ideas, which demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence. There are no noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader, and the overall accuracy is very high throughout the text.
