Student answer (Band 7.5)
It is often argued that all aspects of education from primary education to university level , a lot of time is spent on teaching facts instead of learning practical skills.I agree on this viewpoint as I think this should be implemented in every education level. I will provide reasons which will describe my opinion.
The first and foremost reason is graduate employability gap. Higher education focuses heavily on theories rather than workplace tools. Because of this, university graduates often enter the workforce completely unprepared for the actual daily tasks of a job For instance,A business student might memorize corporate theories from a textbook but graduate without knowing how to manage a real team, pitch to a client, or use industry-standard software.
Secondly, practical skills foster innovation and creativity.Memorizing facts rewards students for giving the "one right answer." On the other hand, learning practical skills (like coding, carpentry, or laboratory experimentation) teaches students how to trial, fail, and innovate. For example,High-tech countries like Finland emphasize project-based, hands-on learning over standardized testing, which consistently results in higher student problem-solving capabilities.
To begin with, the current educational system prioritizes rote memorization over actual understanding, which fails to prepare students for real-life challenges. From primary school through high school, students are routinely forced to memorize vast amounts of data, historical dates, and scientific formulas purely to pass standardized tests. Unfortunately, this information is usually forgotten immediately after the exam concludes. Instead of building critical thinking or problem-solving skills, this method turns students into passive consumers of information. For instance, a student may easily memorize the textbook definition of inflation for an economics test, yet graduate without knowing how to manage a personal budget, pay taxes, or make smart financial investments. Consequently, focusing solely on facts deprives young people of the essential life skills they need to navigate the world independently.
n conclusion, I completely agree that educational institutions allocate far too much time to teaching raw facts rather than imparting practical skills. While memorizing data may help students pass exams, it ultimately fails to equip them with the critical thinking needed for daily life and the hands-on expertise required in the modern workplace. To remedy this gap, curriculum designers at all levels must shift their focus toward experiential learning. Only by prioritizing practical application over rote memorization can the education system truly prepare the next generation to successfully navigate both their personal lives and future careers.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and well-developed position in agreement with the statement that education focuses too much on facts rather than practical skills. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the discussion on the graduate employability gap and the contrast between standardized testing and project-based learning in countries like Finland. The arguments flow logically from primary education up to university level, thoroughly covering the scope of the prompt. The student presents a well-rounded perspective that considers both workplace readiness and life skills. Overall, the task response meets the criteria for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is utilized sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'The first and foremost reason', 'Secondly', and 'To begin with' are employed to guide the reader through the text. However, there are minor issues with mechanical referencing and paragraph sequencing, notably when a later body paragraph ('To begin with...') repeats points about primary and high school education that could have been integrated earlier. Despite this structural quirk, cohesion is managed well overall.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, employing less common items such as 'employability gap', 'standardized testing', 'experiential learning', and 'passive consumers'. There is a clear awareness of collocation and style. However, occasional word choice and phrasing inaccuracies occur, such as the spacing error in 'I think' and punctuation anomalies around parentheses and commas. Vocabulary is adequate to convey precise meanings, and errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the band 7 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional-style logic and relative clauses. There is good control over grammar and punctuation for the most part, with frequent error-free sentences. However, a few minor mechanical errors persist, such as spacing issues after commas and periods (e.g., 'job For instance,A business' and 'Secondly, practical skills') as well as a missing lowercase letter at the start of the final paragraph ('n conclusion'). These occasional slips prevent the text from achieving a higher band, but the majority of sentences remain accurate.
