Student answer (Band 6.0)

Yes, I agree that the education system in our country focuses more on written facts and not only in primary schools, this is the criteria for colleges and universities as well. The syllabus which is set for education is mainly the bookish knowledge and not the pratical aspect of that due to which students lack the complete knowledge of the topic. The subjects and timetables are set in an order that students only read and learn what is written in books. For Ex- History books which contains the information of monuments, freedom fighters, etc. These books have long paragraphs which students are not able to read and memorize them. Instead of this theoretical or bookish knowledge of memorizing long paragraphs, the syllabus should include pratical visits to archaelogical sites, monuments which helps students know, learn, and memorize the entire information.

It is to agreed upon that few subjects cannot be done practically for ex- civics which provides the knowledge of constitution and money flow in the country. Economics, which teaches the economy of the nation. But apart from these types of subject, there are several which requires practical knowledge to have proper understanding and memorize it. For Ex- Biology, the details of flowers, study of plants these should be taught practically rather than in books. These requires live experiments and practicals. One of the other example is Chemistry, this requires practicals more than the theory. Though, schools and universities have chemistry labs but with very limited chemicals and experiments. Students requires experimental knowledge at much higher level than education system is providing currently. This should be change in order to get more bright students.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly agreeing that too much time is spent on learning facts rather than practical skills. A position is presented right from the beginning and maintained throughout the essay. The student supports this position with relevant examples, such as contrasting theoretical history learning with archaeological site visits, and discussing subjects like biology and chemistry. However, some ideas are a bit repetitive and under-developed, falling short of a fully elaborated discussion. For instance, the mention of civics and economics is somewhat abrupt and not fully explored. Overall, the task is adequately addressed, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.0 performance under Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is divided into two main paragraphs, providing an overall coherent arrangement of ideas. The logical progression is generally discernible, as the writer moves from introducing the agreement to discussing specific subjects like history, biology, and chemistry. However, paragraphing is not used to its full potential, and the entire response feels somewhat dense because it is split into only two large blocks of text. Cohesive devices are sometimes basic or mechanical, such as repeated use of 'For Ex-' and phrases like 'It is to agreed upon'. Referencing and linking between sentences can be clunky at times. These features align closely with the Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptors, warranting a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating central ideas related to education, theory, and practical learning. Words such as 'theoretical', 'archaeological', 'memorize', and 'experiments' demonstrate a sufficient working vocabulary. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'bookish knowledge', 'this is the criteria for', 'pratical' (spelling error), and 'One of the other example'. Less common lexical items are attempted but occasionally mishandled in terms of collocation or form. Because the vocabulary is adequate to convey the message despite these recurring errors, a Band 5.5 is appropriate here.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several frequent errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('These requires', 'Students requires', 'This should be change'), incorrect prepositions, and awkward phrasing ('It is to agreed upon that few subjects cannot be done practically'). Punctuation is also occasionally faulty. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the text from reaching a Band 6.0, making a Band 5.5 a fair representation of the grammatical control demonstrated.
