Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often believed by many people that in all aspects of education, from primary schools to universities, the huge amount of time is spent on facts instead of practical learning. I totally agree to this because schools pays more attention on theoratical study and blindly trust past discoveries.

The first reason behind my agreement is theoratical parts. To explain, in most of the countries, students are forced to obtain good grades from theories in order to secure seats in well known universities. A perfect example of this can be seen in India, where learnes are ranked based upon their grades in order to get into medical insititues. This point has clearly made it valid that schools are pressurising students to be fully attentive towards the factual material.

Moving towards the second cause, teachers and scientists are trusting on the discoveries that are mentioned in books and catalogues, which makes it pretty straight forward to learn and write. This ongoing trend is leaving practical learning behind. Rather than practicing these theories, schools focus on books. For instance, Radiologists students do not get to practice the actual radioactive material because of the restrictions, whicch eave them deprive of practice and could cause injury when they have to handle it on the job.

To conclude, to receive hands-on experience studens needs to focu on practicle skills.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by clearly taking a position agreeing that too much time is spent on facts rather than practical learning. Main ideas are presented, such as the focus on theoretical grades in India and the lack of practical experience for medical or radiological students. However, the response has a few limitations. Firstly, it falls below the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, containing only 224 words, which leads to a necessary penalty under Task Achievement. Additionally, some ideas are slightly under-developed or rely on broad generalisations. To reach a higher band, the student needs to fully expand on their examples and ensure the length requirement is comfortably met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is organised into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion, showing a clear overall structure. The student attempts to use transition signals such as 'The first reason behind my agreement' and 'Moving towards the second cause' to sequence ideas. However, paragraphing is affected by the under-length nature of the text, and the conclusion is extremely brief, consisting of a single short sentence. Cohesive devices are sometimes used in a mechanical or slightly unnatural way. Referencing is mostly clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother with more varied transitional phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate their perspective on education, using terms like 'theoretical study', 'discoveries', 'restrictions', and 'hands-on experience'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'theoratical' instead of theoretical, 'learnes' instead of learners, 'insititues' instead of institutes, 'whicch' instead of which, 'eave' instead of leave, 'deprive' instead of deprived, and 'practicle' instead of practical. These errors indicate a Band 6 level, where the range is adequate for the task and communication is not seriously impeded, but frequent lexical slips prevent a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'It is often believed by many people that...' and 'To explain, in most of the countries, students are forced to...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'the huge amount of time is spent' (unnecessary article), 'schools pays more attention' (subject-verb agreement error), 'scientists are trusting on the discoveries' (incorrect preposition), and 'studens needs to focu' (spelling and agreement issues). Despite these errors, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, allowing for a Band 6 score due to the mix of structures and tolerable error frequency.
