Student answer (Band 6.0)

A number of individuals believe that, there are large amount of time spent by children from primary school to university on learning theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills. I totally disagree with this view. In this essay I will discuss the reasons supporting my opinion and provide relevant information.

The first reason for my disagreement is, educational sectors currently use an advanced technology. In simple words, by using technological gadgets it is very easy for them to teach students about hands-on experiments. For instance, the use of a large screen to present videos of the topic is very easy way to teach anything. As it is very easy to understand anything when we something rather then just listening.

Secondly, teachers are increasingly giving students assignments that involve making science projects, crafts and other practical activities. Therefore, compared with the past children are now spending more time on practical experiments. For example, from grades 1 to 5 teachers often give students projects that involve making shapes from cardboard, such as numbers and letters.

Thirdly, professors are well educated and have experience in working in the modern world, therefore they always try to make their students capable in their field. To illustrate, nowadays, in many universities there are special lecture for how to remain prepare for an interview.

In conclusion, using advanced technology in teaching methods, giving more practical based-homework and highly educated teachers are the reasons for my disagreement with this view. Therefore, I think all educational institutions are providing more practical knowledge as compared to the previous time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position from the introduction through to the conclusion, disagreeing with the statement that too much time is spent on facts and not enough on practical skills. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as the use of technology, practical school assignments, and university career preparation. However, some ideas are under-developed or supported with superficial reasoning. For instance, the point regarding technological gadgets in the second paragraph is somewhat vague and relies on repetitive phrasing rather than a fully expanded explanation. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend their supporting arguments with deeper analysis and more specific real-world examples rather than brief generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, distinct body paragraphs, and a concluding summary. Logical progression is established through standard sequencing devices such as 'The first reason', 'Secondly', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and repetitive, particularly in the transitions between sentences. Referencing is occasionally slightly unclear, and internal paragraph cohesion could be smoother. For example, sentences in the second paragraph tend to repeat similar ideas about ease of understanding without fluid logical links. To achieve a higher score, the writer should employ a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that referencing within paragraphs is tighter and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'educational sectors', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'practical activities'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include phrasing like 'large amount of time spent by children', 'practical based-homework' instead of 'practice-based homework', and awkward expressions such as 'remain prepare'. While these lexical shortcomings do not seriously impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in vocabulary control. To improve lexical resource, the student should focus on learning precise collocations and ensure correct word forms are used in varied contexts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as relative clauses and conditional-style reasoning. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include comma splices and intrusive commas (e.g., 'believe that, there are', 'disagreement is, educational sectors'), missing articles or pluralisation issues (e.g., 'there are special lecture'), and awkward prepositional usage inside grammatical patterns. Although these errors rarely impede the overall flow of communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher band. To advance, the writer must exercise greater control over punctuation, subject-verb agreement, and complex sentence construction to increase the proportion of error-free sentences.
