Student answer (Band 6.0)

It has been stated that education at all levels such as schools to university is focused on theoratical concepts as compare to the practical work. I completely agree with this statement and I will discuss my reasons in the upcoming paragraphs.

Firstly, students at primary schools are learning through books with labeled pictures and they gain limited knowledge without practical work. For example, pupils are learing about science subjects and they keep learing about the chemical reaction theoratically four days a week with one practical lab in a week. This limited time for their practical knowledge leave them struggling with theoratical concepts. Both of the skills, theory and lab work should be balanced.

Secondly, many of the schools has target on physical education subject which is really a major initiative for fitness and well being of the pupils but students are not taken to the playground everyday. There focus is to complete syllabus first and remaining time is kept for the practical sports. This is not enough to learn properly. As a result, it seems more theory course than a physical one and students loose interest in learing practical work.

In addition to this, a number of engineering universities and colleges are also following the same pattern of schools. Professors are focusing presentations rather than taking practical classes. For instance, a college in India focused on theory work during the first four months of semester and only one month for the work shop which caused 80 percent students' failure in the final exam. Also the students mentioned lack of practical classes in their feedback. Therefore, theory is important at a certain level but focused practical lectures are must.

In conclusion, this is obvious that a tree can not grow without roots but watering is mendatory part to grow it. So, theoratical knowledge is required to learn any subject but there is no benefit of theory if students are unaware of the practical knowledge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear, well-developed position throughout, which earns a solid performance in this area. The writer clearly states complete agreement with the prompt in the introduction and maintains this stance consistently. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the discussion of science education and engineering colleges. However, there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise in places, such as assuming that most engineering colleges follow a specific flawed pattern, which keeps the response from reaching a higher band. The ideas are generally well-supported, but deeper exploration of alternative viewpoints would help elevate the task response further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout, successfully meeting the requirements of the lower band while exhibiting some characteristics of the next. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the argument, moving logically from primary education to physical education and finally to universities. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader, using transitions such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'In addition to this', and 'In conclusion'. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing within sentences occasionally feels slightly awkward, preventing it from achieving a higher rating.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating the main ideas. There are clear attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'theoratical concepts', 'well being', and 'syllabus', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in spelling, word form, and word choice. For instance, 'theoratical' is consistently misspelled, and phrases like 'focused practical lectures are must' or students 'loose interest' show inaccuracies in collocation and word form. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, the frequency of spelling mistakes and limitations in lexical precision keep this criterion at the current level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including issues with articles, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'many of the schools has target' and 'leave them struggling with theoratical concepts'. However, these errors rarely impede communication. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate better control over articles and pluralisation.
