Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people believe that educational institutes focus on academic learning of students more than teaching them real life skills. I am completely agree with this point of view because schools and universities emphasize on good grades of students to obtain higher ranking in academic results and offering high quality education.

On one side, there is no doubt that learning facts are imporatnt for children to acquire knowlege of different subjects such as science, geography, and history. Students have to learn their academic courses to obtain good grades in exams, which boost their chances to ge higher education and futher success in life. In addition, the overall good result of students upgrades the rank of instituite globally. This is why, most of the schools and the universities prioritise acedemic learning over practical skills.

On other side, learning practical skills are equally important for students in long run. For instant, computer skills are requirement of most of the companies for job candidates and if someone knows all the knowledge of a particular field and have good academic grades but do not know how to operate computer then he would not be short listed for the job. Likewise, art skills e.g. painting, music, and pottery all are valuable to pursue a successful career, however, they are given least attention in educational institutes and a lot of time of students is spent on learning academic books.

In conclusion, all educational institues including primary schools are universities ignore practical skills and pay a lot of attention on teaching facts to get high grades and ranking.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you agree that education gives too much attention to academic learning, and the conclusion restates this view. You also address both sides by recognising the value of factual knowledge before arguing that practical abilities matter for employment and careers. The computer-skills example is relevant and helps explain your point. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully developed: the claim that institutions prioritise facts to improve their global ranking needs explanation, and the examples of art skills are listed without showing how schools could teach them or why they are neglected. Develop these points with specific reasoning or an example to make the argument more convincing and consistently supported.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs and a conclusion. The progression from the value of academic knowledge to the importance of practical skills is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On one side,” “On other side,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation visible. Some linking is mechanical, however, and the contrast markers are not expressed naturally. Within paragraphs, several ideas are placed together without enough explanation of how one leads to the next—for example, the discussion moves from students’ grades to institutions’ global rankings. Use a wider range of natural transitions and clearer references, and build each paragraph around a central point with supporting explanation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to education and employment, including “academic learning,” “practical skills,” “higher education,” and “short listed,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “prioritise” and “pursue a successful career.” However, inaccurate word choice and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make phrases awkward, as in “academic learning of students,” “emphasize on good grades,” and “art skills.” Spelling errors such as “imporatnt,” “knowlege,” and “instituite” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “students’ academic learning,” “emphasise good grades,” and “creative skills.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if someone knows … but do not know how to operate computer then he would not be short listed.” This shows some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction occur across the response. For example, “I am completely agree” should be “I completely agree,” while “learning practical skills are” needs a singular subject or a plural construction. In the conditional example, the subject changes from “someone” to “they,” and “operate computer” needs an article or plural noun. Review agreement and article use, and edit complex sentences to ensure their subjects and verbs remain consistent.
