Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some argue that from primary to tertiary education, so much time is spent on learning facts and not enough practical skills are being taught in schools. I strongly agree with this opinion because many school'sncurriculum doesn't include the practical aspect of the subjects that are being taught. Also shortage of teachers and lack of resources to teach the practicals has contibuted to this trend.

Most school curriculum do not not cover the practical school work. For example during my secondary school education, all the subjects I studied were theories and facts . There was no room to access the practical side of the topics that were been taught in school.

The number of teachers are not enough to take both the theories and practicals. It can be both physically and mentally draining for one person to handle both aspects. For instance if a teacher spends so much time to teach the theory part, he /she might not have the energy to take up the practicals. In many schools and universities a teacher or a lecturer is expected to handle both the practical and theoretical aspect of the various subjects they teach due to shortage of staff.

Lack of resources to practicalize what are being taught in schools has also led to teaching just the theory aspects and ignoring the practical aspects of learning. Many institutions lack the important equipments needed to improve the practical skills of the students. If there are no tools to support the practical aspects of learning, many schools resort to teaching just facts.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion that many schools spend so much time in learning facts than learning the practical skills because of the nature of the school's curriculum, the shortage of teachers and lack of resources required to put into practice what has been taught in theories.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that education gives too much attention to facts and too little to practical skills. You address the question with three relevant reasons—curriculum design, teacher shortages, and lack of resources—and your personal secondary-school example supports the first. This meets the task well, but the reasons are not developed equally: the teacher-shortage paragraph mainly explains workload, while the resources paragraph makes a general claim without a specific example of equipment or a practical subject. To strengthen the response further, explain the consequences for students and add a concrete example, such as limited laboratory work or vocational training. The conclusion restates your position and main reasons effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, three body paragraphs organised around separate reasons, and a conclusion. This makes the argument easy to follow, and phrases such as “For example,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of your discussion. However, some links feel mechanical, and the body paragraphs mostly present one reason at a time without showing how the points connect or build on one another. There is also repetition of “practical aspects” and “theory” across several paragraphs. Use more varied referencing and transitions, and make the progression explicit—for example, explain how limited staffing and resources reinforce a theory-focused curriculum.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant education-related vocabulary, including “tertiary education,” “curriculum,” “resources,” and “practical skills,” so the main ideas are generally clear. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “practical,” “theory,” and “facts,” and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate. For example, “practicalize what are being taught” is awkward, and “important equipments” uses an uncountable noun as a plural. There are also spelling errors such as “contibuted.” These issues keep the vocabulary from being consistently precise and natural. Build a wider set of topic-specific expressions and check spelling, word forms, and collocations during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a reason clause with “because” and a conditional sentence beginning “If there are no tools.” Most of the meaning remains understandable, but errors in agreement, sentence construction, and punctuation recur. For example, “Most school curriculum do not not cover” has a subject–verb agreement problem and a duplicated negative, while “The number of teachers are not enough” also has faulty agreement. In “There was no room to access the practical side,” the construction is not quite natural, and several sentences have missing spaces before punctuation or inconsistent capitalisation. Review singular and plural subjects, verb agreement, and sentence boundaries, then proofread carefully.
