Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this email regarding sports and leisure centre closure which was announsed by local muncipaltiy. In that case, I have fefw suggestions and concern about it which I explain you below.

First of all, me and my family regular user of that center which located near canda post. At the sportplex my kids spend their weekends by playing various games. That facility have many things such as books section, indoor games and outdoor playground.

That sport centre very important for community. Surrounding people also visit this place to spend their weekends. It is not only for sport, because near by community people use it as a community meeting point. People discuss their problem over their.

As your department want to close it, that will effect on community with many ways. If it will close than community have hard time for gathering for any issue or they do not have any other place for spend their weekend with entertainment.

I hope you can understand my concerns and take a look in to this matter in the sense of community.

Thank you,

Mohammad

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear purpose: you explain that your family uses the centre, describe its community role, and outline what residents may lose if it closes. Details such as your children playing games at weekends and neighbours using the centre as a meeting point make the response relevant. However, some parts are less fully developed than others. The facilities are listed, but you could explain more specifically how different family members use them. The effects of closure are also quite general; for example, explain what alternatives residents might lack or how losing the centre could affect their health and social connections. A more formal request for the council to reconsider the closure would also strengthen the letter’s purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: an opening explains why you are writing, followed by paragraphs on family use, community importance, and possible consequences. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all” and “As your department want to close it” help signal the progression, and the closing is appropriate. This organisation is clear, though some links feel mechanical, and the relationship between ideas is occasionally unclear. For instance, “That facility have many things” follows the family-use example without explaining how the listed facilities are used. The reference in “over their” is also unclear. To improve, connect examples more explicitly and use pronouns and linking phrases that clearly identify the people or places being discussed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message, with relevant terms such as “community meeting point,” “indoor games,” and “outdoor playground.” However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors make parts of the letter less clear or less natural. Examples include “announsed,” “muncipaltiy,” and “fefw,” as well as the awkward phrase “regular user.” “Spend their weekends by playing” is also an unnatural collocation. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the overall argument, but they reduce precision and can cause some difficulty. Proofread spelling carefully and learn common phrases for describing facilities, community use, and the consequences of closure.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including “If it will close than community have hard time for gathering,” so there is some variety in structure. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence formation, verb forms, agreement, and articles frequently make the reader work to understand the intended meaning. For example, “me and my family regular user” needs a subject and a correctly formed verb, while “That facility have” has a subject–verb agreement error. The conditional sentence would be clearer as “If it closes, the community will have a hard time gathering.” Practise building accurate sentences with a subject and verb, and check articles and agreement before adding more complex clauses.
