Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to let you know the importance of centre that is provided for the local people.

First of all, I would like to let you know about how essential this centre is for me and my friends. There is a playground to play football , where we go everyday after our school to fresh our mind.

Specifically, the sports and leisure centre is very important for the local community, because it has all necessary equipment and facilities needed for any particular sport and, leisure activities such as cycling.

It would be very difficult for us if the centre closes. It is a best place to visit in our free time. All the activities are included in the rent, because of that I believe that there won't be any other affordable places other than this. It is a best place to visit for all age group.

Kind regards,

Abhi patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You mentioned how you use the centre (football with friends), why it is important (facilities and equipment), and the effects of closure (lack of affordable alternatives). However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the impact of the closure could be expanded by discussing the social consequences for the elderly or the health implications for the community. While you have covered the requirements, the response remains quite brief and lacks the depth needed for a higher band score. To improve, try to elaborate further on your points to provide a more comprehensive argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic transition signals like 'First of all' and 'Specifically' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of cohesive devices is limited. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure could benefit from more sophisticated linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms such as 'essential', 'equipment', and 'facilities'. However, there is a reliance on basic vocabulary and some repetitive phrasing, such as 'let you know' and 'a best place'. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use a wider range of less common lexical items and improve your collocations. For example, instead of 'fresh our mind', you could use 'refresh ourselves' or 'unwind'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'importance of centre' (missing article), 'go everyday' (should be 'every day'), and 'all age group' (should be 'all age groups'). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues, such as the space before the comma in 'football ,'. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
