Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing a letter to express my dissatisfaction with your decision that leisure centre is going to be closed soon, However it will affect the health of local community.
Firstly, me and one of my friend is a member of that sports centre. We usually meet and play football with our team on every Friday at the centre. This will help us to improve our physical health as well as give chance to socialize with each other.
Secondly, sports centre has a enormous benefits to the local community as they are using to keep their selves active, motivated, and healthy. They are using this building as a meet up point also help them to make new friends.
Lastly, I noticed group of old people come over there to do some exercise also they are running laughter club over there, which will help them to reduce stress, improve mental health and loneliness. I think leisure is a vital component of everyone's life, so council have to take people opinion before demolish the public property.
Humble request to give attention on this matter.
Thank you so much.
yours faithfully,
Kaira Jen

| Criterion | Band |
|---|---|
| Task Achievement / Task Response | 7.0 |
| Coherence and Cohesion | 7.0 |
| Lexical Resource | 6.5 |
| Grammatical Range and Accuracy | 6.0 |
| Overall | 6.5 |
Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing how you use the centre, explaining its importance, and outlining the effects of its closure. Your position is clear throughout the letter. To improve, you could provide more specific details about your personal use of the centre to make the letter feel more authentic. For instance, instead of just mentioning football, you could describe how the facility's equipment or environment specifically benefits your training. The ideas are relevant and well-organized, meeting the requirements for a formal letter to a local council.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your arguments. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing (e.g., 'they', 'there') is always precise. For example, in the second paragraph, the use of 'they' to refer to the community is slightly ambiguous. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and supports the progression of your ideas.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your points clearly. You use some good topic-specific phrases like 'vital component', 'socialize', and 'physical health'. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'keep their selves active' (should be 'keep themselves active') and 'take people opinion' (should be 'take people's opinions'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your word forms are accurate. Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, but more sophisticated synonyms would enhance the overall quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('me and one of my friend is' should be 'my friend and I are') and article usage ('a enormous benefits' should be 'enormous benefits'). Additionally, some sentences are slightly fragmented or awkward. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score in this criterion.
