Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding the closure of our local sports and leisure centre. I believe it is an important part of our community and should remain open.
My family and I visit the community centre thrice a week. My parents attends fitness classes and my younger brother goes there for swimming classes. I often use the community centre for the gym and to play badminton with my friends. Besides all these activities, the community centre gives us time to spend with our family members.
Sports is a essential part of our lives. Its keeps our body fit and mind relaxed. The community centre is a great place to relieve all our stress. The sports and leisure centre is essential for all of the community. As not everyone can afford high cost of using a gym and sports facilities. Moreover, it serves as a social hub for the neighbours meet, children makes friend and community events are organised there.
If the centre closes, it will impact the commmunity negatively as there won't be a common place where everyone can meet and greet. Not everyone can join the high-cost structure of the gym. Residents may become less active, which could generate numerous health issues. Young people may lose a place to interact with new friends and may loose their motivation to get their life out of digital platforms.
I kindly request the council to reconsider their decision and to look for an alternative which helps out everyone in need.
Yours faithfully
Deepak

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain how your family uses the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, and your position is consistent throughout. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are slightly more nuanced; for example, when discussing the impact of closure, you could provide a more specific example of a community group that would be affected, rather than general statements about health and social interaction.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'If the centre closes', which help connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and referencing (e.g., using pronouns more effectively to avoid repeating 'the community centre' or 'the centre').
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'reconsider', 'alternative', and 'social hub'. There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'commmunity' (spelling), 'high cost of using' (should be 'high cost of using' or 'high costs associated with'), and 'meet and greet' (which is a bit informal for this context). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise collocations would elevate your writing to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('My parents attends', 'children makes friend') and minor slips like 'a essential' (should be 'an essential') and 'loose' (should be 'lose'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic agreement rules and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures, such as using more conditional or relative clauses, would also help improve your score in this criterion.
