Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern regarding the closing of sports and leisure centre. This centre has several benefits for the local residents who regularly visit it. It is very important to keep this centre open for many reasons.
Regarding the use, my friends and family members play games like badminton, tennis and basketball here in their free time. Additionally, the leisure centre is utilized for doing workouts, yoga and exercises. Also, in summer the centre is used for dance and meditation classes.
Being an active participant of this centre, I believe that this sports and leisure centre helps the individuals to connect and communicate with each other. Residents become socially active, form special bonds and maintain their physical and mental well-being .
If the centre shuts down, there will be consequences as their will be no platform for connection and gatherings. Furthermore, the health of the individuals will deteriorate with no place to do physical activity.
I hope you will reflect on this matter. Thank you so much.
Yours faithfully,
Simran Ladhar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details or personal anecdotes to further develop your ideas. For example, instead of just listing activities, you could describe a specific event or a personal experience that highlights the centre's value. Overall, the response is well-focused and addresses the task requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a polite closing. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Regarding', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of transition words and ensuring that the progression between sentences is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'residents', 'active participant', 'well-being', and 'deteriorate'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise or less common collocations. For instance, instead of 'play games', you could use 'participate in sporting activities'. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs would also help to elevate your writing to a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your control of grammar is generally good. Most sentences are clear and error-free. There is a minor error in the fourth paragraph: 'as their will be' should be 'as there will be'. Additionally, the article usage could be slightly more precise in places, such as 'the closing of the sports and leisure centre'. Despite these minor slips, your grammatical accuracy is strong, and your meaning is always clear. You have a solid foundation in sentence construction.
