Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction regarding the recent decision taken by local council to permanently close the local sports centre. I believe that this centre has contributed greatly in the society, and closing it would be a mistake.
This centre provides several sports opportunities such as badminton, swimming, cricket and a Spacious Gym. It not only benefits the children, but the parents are also enrolled in sports in this sports centre. I have recently purchased the membership of its Gym where i managed to loose 5kg of weight and learned about healthy living.
It provides numerous opportunities to the local community including employment, self awareness sessions, healthy lifestyle lessons and children to grow through sports. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the letter ends abruptly mid-sentence, which prevents a full conclusion. While the ideas are relevant and well-developed, the incomplete nature of the final paragraph slightly impacts the overall task completion. To reach a higher band, ensure you complete your closing statement and sign off appropriately.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'For instance' and 'It not only benefits... but', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The abrupt ending significantly disrupts the coherence of the final section. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring a complete, structured conclusion would enhance the logical progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'contributed greatly', and 'hinder their overall growth'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'purchased the membership' (which is slightly unnatural; 'took out a membership' is better). You attempt to use a variety of words, but some collocations could be more precise. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, though it lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the recent decision taken by local council' (missing 'the' before 'local council') and 'i managed to loose' (capitalization error). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though there is a comma splice in the third paragraph: '...raise certain issues, For instance...'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on article usage and consistent capitalization will improve your accuracy.
