Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter about the concern of the local centre, which will be closing in some time. It plays a crucial role for the local community and should remain open.

My family members and I use this centre for various reasons. I use this for learning to swim. I come here several times a week. My father comes to do yoga, which is useful for him to stay fit and healthy. My mother can meet with her friends here. My friends and I meet here and play badminton, which is fun. This centre plays a vital role in everyone's daily life.

This centre is not only important for my family but also helpful for the whole local community. They can do numerous activities here, such as exercising, socializing, and participating in various sports. Young children can play sports and develop their sports skills.

If the centre closes, there are various consequences for local people. They have fewer opportunities to exercise and be together, which directly impact on the physical and mental health. Young people are unable to organize sports activities, and they would lose the chance to increase their skills.

I have requested that the local council make the correct decision for the local community. Thank you for your time.

Best regards,

Khyati Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain how your family uses the centre, why it is important for the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, providing specific examples like swimming, yoga, and badminton. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'consequences' section by mentioning specific community programs or the social isolation that might result from the closure, which would add more depth to your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'not only... but also', 'if', and 'for example' to link ideas. However, the transitions between some sentences are a bit repetitive (e.g., starting several sentences with 'I' or 'This centre'). Using a wider variety of linking words like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition' would improve the flow and make the connections between your ideas more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'crucial', 'consequences', and 'socialising' correctly. The language is natural and conveys your meaning clearly. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common vocabulary. For instance, instead of 'make the correct decision', you could use 'reconsider the proposed closure' or 'prioritise the needs of the residents'. While your current vocabulary is sufficient for the task, adding more variety and precision would help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are a few minor errors, such as 'which directly impact on' (should be 'impacts' to agree with the singular subject 'which' referring to the situation) and 'I have requested' (the present simple 'I am writing to request' or 'I urge the council' would be more natural in this context). Despite these minor slips, your grammar does not impede communication, and you show good control over basic and some complex structures.
