Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to tell that this is the best sports center in my residential area. It has multiple activities for instance gym, badminton court, walking track, football coaching which are very engaging for children especially.

Furthermore, many of my friends and my family members enjoy going there daily. I used to take my children daily to the sports complex for football classes from 5pm till 6pm. My wife prefer enjoy walk with her friend and I do gym regularly.

These sports complexes are the vital source of entertainment for the community. Children are involved in outdoor activities rather than staying inside and using mobile phones. It keeps one physically and mentally active.

If the center closes local people will prefer staying inside their homes and children will prefer using gadgets that will affect their health. A family can get entertainment under one roof and it is just a walking distance away for the residents of this area.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how your family uses the center, why it is important to the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'why' by discussing the social benefits or the specific health statistics of the community, which would provide more depth to your arguments. Overall, you have successfully communicated your position and provided relevant supporting details for each requirement of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'If the center closes' to link your ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that your referencing is smooth. For example, instead of starting sentences with 'Children' or 'If the center', you could use more sophisticated transition phrases to connect your arguments more fluidly throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'residential area', 'engaging', and 'vital source'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'My wife prefer enjoy walk', which should be 'My wife prefers to enjoy a walk'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it is somewhat basic. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items related to community services and urban planning to demonstrate a more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I am writing this letter to tell that' (should be 'to tell you that') and 'My wife prefer enjoy walk' (subject-verb agreement and infinitive usage). Additionally, there are some punctuation issues and missing articles. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
