Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am a resident of newton town and I am writing to show my concern regarding local leisure center which is going to be closed.

I am working as a digital marketer in an international company so, I have to sit in the office for several hours. This sports center in our area works as a relaxation club for me, my friends and for families because we all spend evenings in that area to enjoy the several types of activities such as football, yoga, walking and running which helps to reduce the stress.

This sports club is beneficial for whole society lives there because people can get chance to be socialize and also they can feel more fit physically and mentally while playing games and doing exercise.

If existing sports center closes society will not have the place to play and spend their leisure time which obviously will effect their physical and mental health.

I would like to request you that do consider all the aspects before closing this center. If this is not possible then provide an alternative place where local community can enjoy in their spare time. I would like to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Jagdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning the benefits to the community, you could provide a specific example of a community event or a particular group (such as the elderly or youth) that relies on the facility. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'If existing sports center closes' and 'I would like to request you', to link your ideas. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', 'In addition to this') to make the flow between sentences more sophisticated and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Words like 'resident', 'international company', and 'beneficial' are used appropriately. However, there are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'works as a relaxation club' (should be 'serves as a place for relaxation') and 'get chance to be socialize' (should be 'have the chance to socialize'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to community services and health would help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as missing articles ('the local leisure center', 'the whole society') and minor errors in verb forms ('I would like to hearing' should be 'I would like to hear'). Additionally, some sentences could be punctuated more effectively to improve readability. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
