Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to bring your attention to the matter of closing the local centre in the area.

I personally visit the centre with my friends to practise for my football matches, my mother accompanies me sometimes because she gets the chance to refresh herself while catching up with her fellows. Moreover, young parents who bring their children for extra curricular activities not only make new connections but also share parental advices with each other.

This community centre serves a lot of benefits in terms of physical fitness to individuals who visit it once or twice a week. By visiting the centre they engage themselves in sports, swimming or other cognitive games as people stay active when they perform these activities as well as reduce their stress.

The local residents will not have any safe place to socialize and participate in other physical and cognitive activities with their friends if the centre closes.

I hope you understand the seriousness of the situation and revise your decision. I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Deep

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre for football and socialising, why it is important for community bonding, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details or examples to further develop your ideas, such as mentioning specific facilities or programs that would be missed. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly addresses the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'In addition' to link ideas, though the flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text. The letter follows a standard formal structure, which is effective for this task type.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'extra curricular activities' and 'cognitive games' are relevant and well-used. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'share parental advices' (advice is an uncountable noun) and 'fellows' (which is slightly informal in this context). To improve, try to use more precise collocations and ensure you are using uncountable nouns correctly. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but more sophisticated or varied word choices would elevate the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound, which ensures that your meaning is never in doubt. There are a few minor errors, such as 'serves a lot of benefits' (which should be 'provides' or 'offers') and the aforementioned issue with 'advices'. Despite these small slips, your control over grammar is generally good, and your punctuation is accurate. You have a solid foundation, and focusing on subject-verb agreement and noun countability will help you achieve higher accuracy.
