Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing this letter to express my feedback about the local recreational centre in our residential area.

This place becomes a part of our routine life as there is plenty of activities available to refresh our minds. In the evening, I play badminton with my friends after school. Additionally, sometimes me and my mother spend quality time over there in the garden.

I believe that this kind of residential places plays a vital role to improve the mental as well as physical wellbeing of people as it is a good source of recreation in today's high paced lifestyle. Moreover, children avoid playing in streets which leads to serious injuries sometimes.

If there would be no recreational centres it will majorly target the mental health of all generations because it is the place where elder and younger people forget their loneliness by socializing with their neighbours and age mates. It helps people to overcome their stress and depression. Thank you for your time and I am looking forward for your decision.

Kind Regards,

Navneet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing your usage of the centre, explaining its importance, and discussing the consequences of closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that the centre helps with mental health, providing a more specific example of a community program or a particular group that relies on the facility would have strengthened your argument. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is evident from the beginning, meeting the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'If there would be', which help guide the reader through your arguments. However, the paragraphing is a bit sparse; the entire body of the letter could be better structured by separating the personal usage from the community impact and the consequences of closure into distinct paragraphs. This would improve the overall flow and make the progression of ideas more apparent to the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recreational centre', 'wellbeing', and 'socializing'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'feedback about' (which is slightly unnatural in this context; 'concerns regarding' would be better) and 'high paced lifestyle'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band score. Attempting to use more sophisticated collocations or topic-specific terminology would enhance your lexical range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'me and my mother' (should be 'my mother and I'), 'this kind of residential places' (should be 'these kinds of places'), and 'If there would be' (should be 'If there were'). Additionally, 'looking forward for' should be 'looking forward to'. While these errors are present, they do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conditional structures.
