You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about the closure of the sports and leisure centre.

My family and I use the swimming pool and gym regularly. I visit the gym every day, and my husband uses the swimming pool every other day. Apart from this, my friends in this building also visit different sports facilities every day.

I wanted to tell you how important these facilities are for the local community. It provides a safe and affordable place for all age groups to exercise and socialize. Elderly people attend gentle fitness sessions, and young people have organized sports centres so they can utilize their time.

If the centre closes, then it could cause serious problems. Many families wouldn't be able to afford private facilities, and children can not be encouraged to do physical activities.

I strongly urge the council to reconsider this decision and explore alternative solutions to keep the centre open.

Yours faithfully,

s

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you and your family use the centre, the importance of the facility for the community, and the potential negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the 'possible effects' by providing more specific examples of how the closure would impact the social fabric of the neighbourhood, rather than just mentioning affordability. Overall, the ideas are relevant and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this', 'If the centre closes', and 'In addition' (implied). To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of linking words and transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly. Currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and using more sophisticated cohesive devices would enhance the logical flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, using terms like 'leisure centre', 'affordable', 'socialize', and 'reconsider'. The language is natural and appropriate for the context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive (e.g., using 'use' and 'visit' multiple times). To achieve a higher band, aim to incorporate more precise or less common lexical items, such as 'vital amenity', 'detrimental impact', or 'alternative arrangements'. Your spelling is accurate, and your word choices do not impede communication, which is a strength.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'Many families wouldn't be able to afford private facilities' is a well-constructed conditional sentence. There are very few grammatical errors, and your punctuation is consistent. To improve, you could experiment with more complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater control. The current level of accuracy is high, and your writing is easy to follow, which is a positive indicator for this criterion.
