Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter in regards of sports and leisure centre that is planned to be closed in the future.
I usually go to the centre with my friends and family as it is the closest building near to the residential area, which provides not only the way of entertainment but it also gives the opportunity to buy things that are used in day to day life. I go there twice in a week to buy groceries, and I have also joined a tennis club where me and my friends usually go for playing.
The centre is useful for local residents because it gives opportunities to the people for indulging in physical activities as there are many sports offered by sports clubs. It also helps senior citizens to spend their free time at the centre and socialize with people of same age.
If the centre is closed then people would be forced remain at home, restricting them to take part in physical activities and making them to travel to different locations to buy groceries. As a result of this, people might face obesity and health issues, or might be permanent moved to other city.
I hope you would make a decision which is beneficial for everyone.
Yours faithfully,
Dharmveer Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important to the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the link between the centre and 'buying things' is slightly confusing, as sports centres are not typically grocery stores. Focusing more on the specific sports or social facilities would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task requirements are met effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'as a result of this' and 'in addition', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and the letter follows a standard formal structure. To improve, try to vary your linking words to avoid repetitive sentence starters and ensure that the connection between sentences is more fluid.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'residential area', 'socialise', and 'restricting'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'in regards of' (should be 'in regard to') and 'playing' (which is redundant after 'go for'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Using more specific collocations related to community services or health benefits would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'the closest building near to' (redundant), 'me and my friends' (should be 'my friends and I'), and 'might be permanent moved' (should be 'permanently moved'). Additionally, there are minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on improving your control over passive voice and subject-verb agreement.
