Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir / Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern about the leisure centre closing news.
This morning I heard the news that the leisure centre is getting closed. It was really disheartening news for me. I, my family and friends are a daily visitor of the centre. We used this centre to the fullest. We play a lot of games there like soccer, tennis, wolly ball, basket ball. Our so many memories are connected with this centre, we grew up spending time there.
Moreover, this is the only centre in our area and many people uses this. If the sports and leisure centre gets closed it will impact the local residents, as many kids and youngsters practice and play there. It help them to stay fit and develop there skills.
Also, there are many families who are not able to afford the hefty amount of fees of the professional sports centre. They let their children practice in this centre. If this get closed many families dreams of seeing their children grow will get impacted.
Looking forward to hearing from you the positive news.
Yours Sincerely,
John Smith

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explained how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a local council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention that the centre helps kids stay fit, expanding on specific programs or the social value of the centre would have provided a more comprehensive response. Overall, the task is fulfilled, but the depth of argument could be improved to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Also' to transition between ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between your personal use of the centre and the community's use is slightly abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'leisure centre', 'local residents', and 'hefty amount of fees'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'disheartening news' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) and 'wolly ball' (spelling error for volleyball). Additionally, some phrasing is repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'centre'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms and ensure that your word choices are consistently natural and accurate for a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'many people uses this' (should be 'use') and 'If this get closed' (should be 'gets'). There are also punctuation and spelling errors, such as 'I, my family and friends' (which should be 'My family, friends, and I') and 'there skills' (should be 'their'). These errors are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points.
