Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to describe the importance of sports centre for our local community, which the local council decided to close.

The sports club is used by our local hockey team every weekend, as I am the captain of that team, we do not have any other place nearby to continue our practice. Even though, inter-school games and sports event are held at the same centre.

The centre is also essential for our senior citizens and kids, because this is the only space in our area with proper walking path and park. Seniors citizens mostly use that place for their morning walk and yoga. Moreover, kids and parents also love that area.

If this centre is closed by our council then this is a huge drawback for our local community. As I already discussed this is the only recreational place we have in the whole neigh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre (hockey team practice), why it is important (community space for seniors and children), and the negative effects of closure. However, the response ends abruptly mid-sentence, which prevents a full development of the final point. To reach a higher band, ensure you complete your thoughts and provide a clear, formal conclusion that reinforces your position. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a local council, though it could be slightly more formal in its structure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Even though' to link ideas. However, the progression is slightly interrupted by the incomplete final sentence, which affects the overall flow. To improve, ensure that your paragraphs are balanced and that you use a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. The use of referencing (e.g., 'that place', 'the same centre') is generally clear, but ensure these references are precise to avoid ambiguity.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recreational', 'essential', and 'drawback'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'sports centre' (should be 'the sports centre') and 'inter-school games and sports event' (should be plural 'events'). The vocabulary is functional and allows you to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would be required for a higher band score. Focus on using more precise adjectives and nouns to describe the community impact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to describe...' and 'If this centre is closed by our council then this is a huge drawback...'. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the local council decided to close' (should be 'has decided to close') and 'as I am the captain... we do not have' (a comma splice error). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for better control over sentence boundaries and verb tenses. Aim to vary your sentence structures further while ensuring grammatical accuracy.
