Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding the issues and consequences related to the sports and leisure centre.

We usually visit the centre to play badminton and other games in weekend. I and most of my friends participate in many of the tournaments conducted in the centre. We also joined a club which conduct free seminars for yoga and recreational activities.

I think the sports and leisure centre play vital role in everyones life. As all the age group visits the centre for different purposes but it is mainly built to inculcate sports. I also recommend to my co-workers to join local community centre.

Moreover, this centre is important for everyone if this ceases it will impact everyones social life. As this centre helps to boost physical and mental ability of people, it would lower the interest towards sports.

I would request to take a look on this matter at your earliest.

Kind regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described your usage of the centre, explained its importance, and outlined the consequences of its closure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that the centre helps with physical and mental ability, this point could be expanded with more specific detail to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and your position is clear throughout the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'As', though the flow between sentences is occasionally a bit mechanical. The referencing is generally clear, although some sentences, such as 'As all the age group visits the centre', feel slightly disjointed from the previous thought. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of your request.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'consequences', 'recreational activities', and 'inculcate'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'inform you regarding the issues' (better: 'inform you of my concerns') and 'lower the interest towards sports' (better: 'diminish interest in sports'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. You should focus on using more precise collocations to convey your meaning more naturally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'in weekend' (should be 'on the weekend'), 'everyones life' (missing apostrophe), and 'I would request to take a look on this matter' (should be 'take a look at'). Additionally, there are some subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'centre play' instead of 'centre plays'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and punctuation errors.
