Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0

The response fails to address the core requirements of the prompt. The task asks you to write to the council regarding the potential closure of an existing sports centre. However, your letter discusses general city facilities like schools and malls and then requests the construction of a new centre, rather than arguing against the closure of an existing one. You have misunderstood the scenario provided in the instructions. While you mention the importance of exercise, the content does not align with the specific bullet points regarding how you currently use the centre or the consequences of its closure. To improve, ensure you read the prompt carefully to identify the specific situation.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0

The letter lacks a logical structure. It begins by repeating the prompt instructions, which is unnecessary. The paragraphing is non-existent, and the flow of ideas is disjointed. There is a lack of cohesive devices to link sentences, making the text feel like a list of loosely related thoughts rather than a formal letter. To improve, use clear paragraph breaks for each bullet point and employ linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to connect your ideas logically and guide the reader through your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 4.5

The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive. You rely on basic words such as 'needs', 'places', and 'important'. There are also several errors in word formation and usage, such as 'loss there health' instead of 'lose their health' and the misuse of apostrophes in plurals like 'university's' and 'restaurant's'. These errors occasionally make the meaning slightly unclear. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary related to community services and health, and pay closer attention to basic spelling and punctuation rules regarding plurals and possessives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'leisure centers is'), incorrect verb tenses, and run-on sentences that lack proper punctuation. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often inaccurate, such as 'if people do not will exercises they can not fit'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and apostrophes. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, ensuring subjects and verbs agree, and using full stops to separate distinct ideas.
