Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to explain about the centre that is used by local community.

To begin with, the centre in our area is very well maintained by the people from local council. From the time I and my family shift in this area, we are using this centre for activities such as for Badminton and for waking early in the morning. But I heard that you are planning to close this place permanently.

I know it is difficult to maintain daily, but the centre is very important for the people from this community because the elders pass their time here every day in the evening with their fellow senior citizens. Moreover, children play sports and adults find this place very stress free. Consequently, the local people will not be able to spend their time without the centre, and they become more stress full, if you close this centre. I hope you consider this request of mine.

Thank you for your understanding. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Your Sincerely,

Vrushti Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. You described how your family uses the centre for badminton and walking, explained its importance for the community, particularly for elders and children, and outlined the negative effects of closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To improve, you could expand slightly on the specific benefits of the centre to provide more depth, as some points are a bit brief. For example, elaborating on how the centre fosters community spirit would strengthen your argument. Overall, you have successfully fulfilled the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. While the progression of ideas is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. The overall structure is sound and serves the purpose of the letter well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'maintained', 'permanently', and 'senior citizens'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'waking early' (likely meant 'walking') and 'stress full' (should be 'stressful'). Additionally, 'shift in this area' is not the most natural collocation; 'moved to this area' would be better. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that your word choices are precise. The current vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the sophistication required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I and my family shift' (should be 'my family and I moved'), 'the centre that is used by local community' (needs an article: 'the local community'), and 'they become more stress full' (should be 'they would become more stressed'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and subject-verb agreement. Incorporating a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional sentences, would also help demonstrate better grammatical control.
