Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the possible closure of the local sports and leisure centre.
Let me explain the situation to you. This centre is an important part for the community, providing facilities for sports and other social activities such as celebration, sports competition and concerts. My friends and I use this centre for regular exercise, we take part in weekly swimming competitions organised by local schools.
Furthermore, the sports and leisure centre is important to the local community because it provides a place for people to socialise and stay fit. Residents can take part in activities like swimming, gym to stay healthy and people can also use the centre for festivals and children's' competitions.
I would kindly request you do not close the centre because it would have negative consequences like people may no longer have a convenient place to exercise, which can result in severe health problems and make it difficult for the old people to travel far from the community to go to the other location.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you need any further details
Yours faithfully,
Anuj

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important to the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas could be developed further; for instance, the description of the 'negative consequences' is a bit brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully explored with specific details or examples to demonstrate the impact on the community more vividly. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'because', though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'socialise', 'convenient', and 'consequences'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'important part for the community' (should be 'important part of the community') and 'gym to stay healthy' (which lacks a determiner or preposition). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater sophistication and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as the comma splice in 'regular exercise, we take part in' and the incorrect pluralisation 'children's' competitions' (should be 'children's competitions'). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'make it difficult for the old people' (better as 'the elderly'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and punctuation to enhance accuracy.
