Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response of hearing the news that our sports and leisure center is going to be closed.

I am living with my family in this town for last ten years. When we get a free time, we use this center to do lots of activities such as exercise, family gathering and playing sports. Additionally, I always play badminton with my friends, and our charity organization organize sports events in this place.

The local community need these type of center because they need a place to relax. Moreover, the children are enrolled in the classes conducted in this center. This help them to engage in physical activities. Also, the zumba classes which is conducted on tuesday is helping the older people.

If this center is closed, the local people will have negative effects. The children and the adults will not have any place to do their leisure activities. As a result, our people will become lazy, and they will be addicted to the social media. This will effect their health and mental well-being

Thank you for your understanding.

I am looking forward to your prompt response.

Yours sincerely,

Jeya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the impact of the closure on health could be expanded with more specific examples beyond just 'lazy' and 'social media'. Overall, the response covers the requirements well and maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'As a result' to link your ideas. While the progression of ideas is clear, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to vary your linking words and ensure that the transition between sentences feels more natural rather than relying on a list-like structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'charity organization', 'physical activities', and 'mental well-being'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'in response of hearing' (should be 'in response to hearing') and 'these type of center' (should be 'these types of centers'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Focus on using more sophisticated collocations and ensuring grammatical agreement with plural nouns.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am living' (should be 'I have been living'), 'The local community need' (should be 'needs'), and 'zumba classes which is conducted' (should be 'are conducted'). Additionally, there is a confusion between 'effect' and 'affect' in the final paragraph. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage.
