Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding the benefits of sports centre on local community.
I am John Lu, and have been a resident of Brampton for the past five years. I usually go to the sports and leisure centre to spend some quality time with my friends and family members by doing some exercise and playing outdoor activities. As, This not only benefits them to relive stress from everyday life but also helps in strengthen the bond between society.
This piece of area plays a crucial for every age of people as children and youngsters play sports activities there such as Cricket and Badminton. In addition, grey people loves to spend time with their grandchildren.
There would have many negative impacts on every individual's life, if it get close. For instance, if young people retrieve from playing outside, their screen time will increase. Moreover, for senior people it will become difficult to spend time with their acquaintance.
I hope you will consider all the positives and drop the idea to shut down the leisure centre.
Yours sincerely,
John Lu

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for example, the explanation of the impact on senior citizens is a bit vague. To reach a higher band, ensure that your arguments are fully extended with more specific details or examples. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused on the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'In addition', 'Moreover', and 'For instance', to link your ideas. However, the use of some connectors is slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'As, This not only...'. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly in the second paragraph where 'This piece of area' is used to refer to the centre. Improving the variety and natural flow of your linking words will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'resident', 'acquaintance', and 'leisure centre'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'grey people' (instead of 'senior citizens' or 'the elderly'), 'retrieve from playing' (instead of 'refrain from'), and 'This piece of area'. These errors occasionally impede the precision of your message. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise terminology for different age groups and social concepts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'benefits of sports centre' (missing article), 'helps in strengthen' (incorrect verb form), and 'if it get close' (subject-verb agreement). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some errors with comma usage and sentence fragments. While these errors do not prevent communication, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage to improve your accuracy.
