Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing this letter to talk with you about the community center and various impacts it has on the community and effects it will have on the community if it closes.

my grandfather has been going to the center for almost 5 years now and to him that is the highlight of his day to catch up with his friends, play cards or just spend some quality time with them. I also do believe that the weekly basketball matches we have there are beneficial for the children to keep them involved in more physical activities and it also gives a chances to our community to come together.

However it feel like if the center will close we will be very upset about it as that place was not only local center but a place to make memories together as community. I would like to request to you to rethink about this. Looking forward for your prompt response

Yours faithfully,

avneet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how your grandfather and you use the centre, why it is important for community cohesion, and the negative effects of its closure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, while you mention the basketball matches, expanding slightly more on the specific benefits to the youth or the social atmosphere would have provided a more comprehensive response. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council, and your purpose is clear from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organised, with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'not only... but', which help the flow of ideas. However, the paragraphing is slightly underdeveloped; the second paragraph contains multiple distinct ideas that could have been separated for better clarity. Additionally, some transitions between sentences feel a bit mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single, well-developed theme.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your points clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'community center', 'physical activities', and 'prompt response'. However, the range is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with the word 'community', which appears four times in the first paragraph alone. There are also minor issues with collocation, such as 'talk with you about' (better: 'write to express my concerns regarding') and 'gives a chances' (should be 'gives a chance'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise synonyms would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'it feel like' should be 'it feels like', and 'if the center will close' should be 'if the center closes' (first conditional). There are also punctuation errors, such as the lack of capitalisation for 'I' and 'sir'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
