Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you regarding matter of recreational centre which is in our apartment.
To utilise this leisure centre we are doing various activities and programs. To start with, from children to old age people all are doing many things. For example, young people are using it for the fitness purposes, childrens are playing games with their friends, organising cultural programs, local events and families are also spending their quality time.
Sports and leisure centre is extremely important for every people. As folks are coming for jogging, running, group exercises, barbeque programs, celebrating festivals and events. That is why people are feeling a part of community.
I believe it would be detrimental effects on community if centre will shut off. People will get bored as no where to go for leisure time. Moreover, children might feels isolated and lonely.
I hope you would look into this matter and come up with good decisions.
Yours faithfully,
Pragati Nanera.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: how the centre is used, its importance to the community, and the potential effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of how the family uses the centre is quite general, and the explanation of the community impact could be more detailed to fully satisfy the requirements for a higher band. The response is clear and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout, meeting the basic requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the argument. There is a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. Phrases like 'To start with' and 'Moreover' are used correctly but are quite basic. Additionally, some transitions between sentences are abrupt, such as the jump between describing activities and the importance of the centre. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. There are several instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'request you regarding matter of recreational centre' and 'shut off'. The student relies on simple, high-frequency words to convey meaning. While the message is clear, there is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. To improve, the student should focus on learning more precise collocations and avoiding literal translations of phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'every people' (should be 'everyone' or 'all people'), 'childrens' (incorrect plural), 'no where to go' (should be 'nowhere'), and 'might feels' (should be 'might feel'). These errors are noticeable and occasionally distract the reader, though they do not prevent the overall meaning from being understood. The control of verb tenses and subject-verb agreement needs more attention to achieve a higher score.
