Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing today to bring an advantages of our council center and drawbacks if it closes.
All the residents including friends and family member who live here have benefited from community center which provides various sports for younger population to the seniors to improve and maintain the physical health. We have longer winter months thus council hall is the great place to use as it has both outdoor and indoor activity areas which can be used by whole community residences.
During extreme winter months it is not safe to play, walk or exercise outdoor because of the snow. As a result all individual spend their time using this hall which give them opportunity to stay fit thus the council is so important for our community.
I saw the notice that board of director planing to discontinue the hall which is upsetting news for the all community individual because it is the only hall we have. Other hall is far from our home and it is not safe to walk to other hall.
I would really appreciate if you keep this council hall for our community and to discuss more about the advantages you can call or email me. Look forward to hearing from you.
Your faithful,
Jake

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how the centre is used, its importance to the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat repetitive; for instance, the mention of 'winter months' and 'safety' is repeated across two paragraphs. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-developed point rather than restating similar information. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'However', which help the flow. However, the transition between ideas is sometimes mechanical, and there are issues with referencing; for example, 'Other hall' is used without a clear antecedent, making it slightly confusing. Paragraphing is present, but the logical progression could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their subjects would enhance the cohesion of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use relevant terms like 'discontinue', 'residents', and 'physical health'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'bring an advantages' (should be 'outline the advantages') and 'community individual' (which is unnatural). There are also minor errors in word formation, such as 'planing' (planning). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure that your vocabulary is used in the correct grammatical context. The current range is adequate for the task but lacks the flexibility required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the council center', 'the great place'), pluralization ('family member' instead of 'family members'), and verb forms ('hall which give them' instead of 'hall which gives them'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'I am writing today to bring an advantages'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
