Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I'm writing this letter to share my thoughts about closing of centre closing.
I heard that local community is going to close the community centre in this August, 2026. I have a lot of memories with this centre becaue I got married this 5 years ago, we celebrated my kid's first birth day there. With that every friday, we are playing vollyball there too.
As in Shelburne, it's the only multi-purpose centre for the residents like for games, parties and entertainment specially in winter season which is assisting everyone to keep their self active as there is not much outdoor activities to do. As a result, this centre provides the residents a lot of options to enguage in different tasks.
Moreover, 70% of Shelburne's community is of older people and 30% of younger ones. So, if this centre get closed it can cause health issues like heart problems or depression. Because in this centre, the spend atleast 3-4 days per week in which they meet their friends and spend their time.
So, I have a humble request to think about all the cons and take decision preciously.
Yours faithfully,
Simran Gill.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing how you use the centre, explaining its importance, and outlining the consequences of its closure. Your ideas are relevant and clearly presented. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the centre is used for volleyball and parties, expanding slightly on the social atmosphere or the specific benefits of these activities would have strengthened the response. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, and your position is consistent throughout. To improve, ensure that each point is fully elaborated with more descriptive detail to demonstrate a more comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'As a result', 'Moreover', and 'So' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. For example, the transition between the importance of the centre and the potential health impacts on the elderly could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'this 5 years ago', which disrupts the flow. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring clear pronoun references would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'multi-purpose', 'residents', and 'entertainment'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'becaue', 'vollyball', 'enguage', and 'preciously' (likely intended as 'precisely'), which occasionally distract the reader. Furthermore, some word choices are slightly unnatural, such as 'share my thoughts about closing of centre closing' and 'take decision preciously'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading and a broader range of precise vocabulary to reach a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, such as 'I have a lot of memories with this centre becaue I got married this 5 years ago', 'keep their self active', and 'if this centre get closed'. These errors, including issues with subject-verb agreement and preposition usage, are noticeable. While the meaning remains clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from being considered highly accurate. Focusing on basic sentence construction and checking for common errors like verb tense consistency would be very beneficial.
