Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to express my concerns about the possible closure of our local community centre. This centre plays an important role in the well-being of the local community. Personally, my family and friends regulary visit the centre and participate in physical and leisure activities. The centre has been offering plenty of services including swimming, yoga and children based activities.
This centre has its own importance for the residents of the town. Elderly people here for physical activities and individulas socialise here with other members. Moreover, it is a favourite place for children of all age groups. People come here to reduce their stress and anxiety.
If this centre will close, it will bring some disadvantages for our community. Residents have to find a new place for recreational activities and children and elderly people will be less active. I hope that authorties will consider my request to put a hold on the closure of this centre.
Regards,
Gurmeet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response covers all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details or personal anecdotes to further develop your ideas. For instance, instead of saying 'my family and friends regularly visit', you could mention a specific activity you enjoy together. The ideas are relevant and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. There is a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'If this centre will close', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between ideas could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and the use of linking words is somewhat basic. Improving the variety of cohesive devices would help the text flow more naturally and elevate the overall structure of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'well-being', 'recreational activities', and 'socialise'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'regulary' (regularly), 'individulas' (individuals), and 'authorties' (authorities). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure you proofread for common spelling mistakes. The vocabulary used is functional and appropriate for the context, but lacks the sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'Elderly people here for physical activities' (missing a verb) and 'If this centre will close' (incorrect conditional structure; it should be 'If this centre closes'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To achieve a higher band, focus on using more complex sentence forms accurately and ensure subject-verb agreement is consistent. The punctuation is generally correct, though the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly abrupt compared to the prompt's suggested 'Dear Sir or Madam'.
