Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/ Mam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to express my concerns towards the community centre. I would like to explain the situation.
Firstly, I would like to share my memories which I created with my family and friends in the centre. I could remember the community centre was always be the first choice for our family to have gatherings, marriages, and games.
The centre is always a great place to organize sports and leisure activities as it has all the resources to make these type of events memorable and successful. Additionally, some cities are built up around the centre so everyone would take the benefit of it.
If the centre closes, then local people will have the negative impact. For instance, they have to look for another place to organize events which could be expensive and difficult at the same time.
I would appreciate it if you could take the necessary steps to remain the community centre open and available for everybody.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre for gatherings and events, why it is important for the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the explanation of the 'negative impact' is quite brief. To reach a higher band, you should expand on these points with more specific details or examples, such as the specific types of sports facilities available or the social impact on elderly residents, to provide a more comprehensive response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', and 'If the centre closes' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from a more sophisticated range of linking words to connect your arguments more fluidly throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'memorable', 'successful', and 'consideration'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'remain the community centre open' should be 'keep the community centre open', and 'take the benefit of it' is better expressed as 'benefit from it'. The vocabulary is generally functional but lacks the variety and precision required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I could remember the community centre was always be' (should be 'I remember the centre was always') and 'make these type of events' (should be 'these types of events'). Punctuation is generally correct, but the errors in verb tense and agreement are noticeable. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage, as these errors currently occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score.
