Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir,
I hope you are doing well. This letter is regarding the significance of sports and leisure centre for our community.
I usually go to the centre in my free time to do light workout and yoga. It provides me an opportunity to socialize with other people, which is not only good for my mental health but also helps me to stay fit and healthy. My children also enjoy spending time in the sports centre. They play games and perform activities such as trampoline surfing, swimming. It is beneficial for their growth and development. My parents often go to leisure centre to meet their neighbours and have conversations with them.
This centre plays a pivotal role in the daily life of people of all ages. Therefore, it should not be closed. If it is closed, the children, adults and elderly will have nowhere to spend their free time. They might experience stress and burnout by staying indoors.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope you will take necessary steps for the welfare of our society.
Regards,
Iqbal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explained how you and your family use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details or examples, such as mentioning the name of the centre or specific community events held there, to further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more sophisticated engagement with the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices like 'Therefore' and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect sentences more fluidly. Currently, some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and more varied cohesive devices would enhance the overall structure.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'pivotal role' and 'welfare of our society' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing. For example, 'trampoline surfing' is likely an incorrect collocation, and 'do light workout' should be 'do a light workout'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repeating basic words like 'centre' or 'people' by using synonyms or referring back to the subject more creatively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good control of basic grammar and use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free and easy to understand. There are some minor errors, such as missing articles ('the' sports and leisure centre) and slight issues with pluralization ('people of all ages'). While these errors do not impede communication, you should focus on consistent article usage and subject-verb agreement to move into the higher band range. Your use of punctuation is generally accurate and supports the clarity of your writing.
