Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I'm writing this request letter for not closing the sports and leisure centre as it is very important for our local people for being fir in both physical and mental ways.
This is important for us because everyday elderly age group people they do exercise and spend some quality time with their friends and for other age group including children they all go for daily swimming classes to be fit and healthy.
So if it gets close, it will not only affect children but also elder people as they enjoy that time more than anyone because for them this is the only reason when they step out from their home and if this get close it will affect them more with their health as they might face loneliness or depression.
Thank you for your time and I hope you will consider our request and I'll be waiting for your positive response.
Best Regards,
Alin Maknojia

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state how the centre is used by different age groups, explain its importance for physical and mental well-being, and describe the potential negative effects of closure, such as loneliness and depression. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that elderly people use the centre, providing a more specific example of a class or activity would have strengthened the response. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council, and your position is clear throughout the text.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'So' and 'because' to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally repetitive, and the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in addition to this,' to better connect your points and improve the overall progression of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'physical and mental ways,' 'swimming classes,' and 'loneliness or depression.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'request letter for not closing' (which should be 'requesting that the council does not close') and 'elder age group people' (which is slightly unnatural). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise vocabulary and more natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'for being fir' (typo for 'fit'), 'everyday elderly age group people they do exercise' (redundant subject), and 'if this get close' (subject-verb agreement error). These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding redundant pronouns will help improve your accuracy significantly.
