Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to express my deep concerns regarding the closure of the sports and leisure centre .

My Family and Friends rely heavily on this centre throughout the week. Every Saturday, my children attend swim lessons and my husband goes gym there. I join a weekly badminton group every Tuesdays along with my neighbors, My elderly mother, joins yoga classes twice a week. It is a central hub for our family's health and physical routine.

The Leisure centre is vital for the local community as it is affordable, accessible to all age groups, and backgrounds to stay active. It acts as a social lifeline especially for retirees as who gathers at the cafe after their morning sessions, and create a safe, positive environment for the teenagers to play football and socialize after school.

If this centre closes, the negative effect on the families will be immediate and far-reaching. Most of the families have to buy alternate memberships of gyms in the neighboring towns which will be very expensive, Physical activity levels will inevitably drop resulting in greater pressure on the health department. Just as concerning is the loss of community cohesion—without this shared space, isolation among older residents will increase, and young people will lose a constructive outlet for their energy.

I strongly urge the council to reconsider this decision and explore alternative funding solutions to keep the centre open.

Yours Faithfully,

Kshama Parekh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained how your family uses the centre, articulated its importance to the community, and described the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council, and your position is consistent throughout. The ideas are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the specific activities your family participates in and the social impact on retirees. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each point, and a formal conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'If this centre closes' and 'Just as concerning is' to link your thoughts smoothly. The progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the relationship between the centre's closure and the potential negative outcomes is clearly established. The flow is natural and professional throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the context, such as 'social lifeline', 'far-reaching', 'community cohesion', and 'constructive outlet'. There are a few minor slips, such as 'goes gym' (should be 'goes to the gym') and 'as who gathers' (should be 'who gather'). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use topic-specific language effectively, which helps convey your message with precision and clarity. The vocabulary is sufficient to express your concerns and arguments well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While there are some grammatical errors, such as 'every Tuesdays' (should be 'every Tuesday') and 'Most of the families have to buy' (should be 'Most families would have to buy'), the majority of your sentences are error-free. Punctuation is generally handled well, though there is an unnecessary comma after 'neighbors'. Your control over complex structures is good, and the minor errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader or obscure your meaning.
