Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the local community center and recent decision has been taken to close the center. Moreover, it would be grateful if you could remain center as it is, because is serves the purpose of leisure to the local people in the community.
Firstly, if I talk about my personal experience using the community center, it is a place to relax on weekends
with friends and family, through which everyone can spend some quality time together despite connecting virtually.
Secondly, in our community mostly families have the children and elders, who often like to do indoor activities like swimming and playing table games at center on weekdays as well and the working professionals often hosts parties and get together on weekends. Thus, it is an important place for the all the residents in community.
Lastly, due to limited open space in our area, it is impossible for everyone to go for outings and as a result the social interaction will significantly drop down, if the center is demolished. Thus, looking forward to your response on this concern and hopefully the council will rethink on this decision.
Yours faithfully,
Tim cook

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, while you mention that the centre is important for families and professionals, expanding slightly more on the specific benefits of these activities would have strengthened the response. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on one of the required points. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by grammatical errors, such as the opening sentence which lacks a clear connection between the concern and the decision. Improving the use of referencing and varied linking words would help the ideas flow more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'working professionals', 'social interaction', and 'demolished'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'it would be grateful if you could remain center' (should be 'it would be appreciated if you could keep the centre open') and 'the social interaction will significantly drop down' (should be 'decline'). Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary would improve your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include 'recent decision has been taken' (missing article), 'is serves the purpose' (incorrect pronoun), and 'for the all the residents' (redundant article). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are persistent. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately without missing auxiliary verbs.
