Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding your decision on closing the sports and leisure center in my neighborhood. The center has become integral part of people of our society.

My friend and I often go their for a gym facility, and also take part in other activities. Which help us to stay active and motivated. All kinds of activity are available for youngsters to elderly people. My all family members from children to grandparents come and participate accordingly.

This center plays a more important role than just a sport center because it improves the relationship and the understanding among community members. People are getting place to interact with other especially children and older people who stay home all day.

It would effect negatively the social life of people if it get closed. The motivation among youngster to take part in physical activities would be get drained. As a result, they are high likely to get stick to screens. Therefore, I would like to request reconsideration of decision to close the center.

I look forward to hearing prompt response from you.

Yours sincerely,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the facility, why it is important for the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of how your family uses the center could be more specific to better illustrate the impact. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the position is maintained throughout, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level of task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally hindered by minor errors in sentence structure and referencing. For example, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical, and there is a slight lack of variety in the linking words used. Improving the transition between sentences would help elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'integral', 'reconsideration', and 'motivated'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'go their' (should be 'there'), 'get stick to screens' (should be 'get stuck to screens'), and 'get closed' (should be 'is closed'). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a need for more precise control over collocations and word forms. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms would help you reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'decision on closing' (should be 'decision to close'), 'My all family members' (should be 'All my family members'), and 'would be get drained' (should be 'would be drained'). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb tense consistency. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will be beneficial.
