Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern regarding your decision to close the sports and leisure center in my neighborhood. The center has become an integral part of our community.

My friend and I often go there for the gym facility, and also take part in other activities. This helps us to stay active and motivated. A wide range of activities is available for people ranging from youngsters to the elderly. My entire family, from children to grandparents, comes to the center and participates in these activities.

This center plays a more important role than simply providing sports facilities. because it strengthens relationships and promotes understanding among community members. People have a place to interact with others especially children and older people who stay home all day.

It would affect negatively the social life of people if it gets closed. The motivation among youngsters to take a part in the physical activities would decline. As a result, they are highly likely to become more dependent on screens. Therefore, I would like to request a reconsideration of the decision to close the center.

I look forward to hearing a prompt response from you.

Yours sincerely,

Rahul

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explain how your family uses the gym and activities, describe the community importance of the center as a social hub, and outline the negative consequences of closure, such as increased screen time for youth. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a council, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly more on the specific types of activities offered to provide a more vivid picture of the center's value, but overall, the response is well-developed and fully satisfies the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each prompt requirement, and a formal conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'As a result' and 'Therefore' to link your arguments. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better connect the center's importance to the consequences of its closure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'integral part of our community' and 'promote understanding' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'take a part in', which should be 'take part in'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the more sophisticated or 'less common' lexical items that would push the score into the 8.0 range. Focusing on more precise collocations and varied synonyms for common words would enhance your lexical profile.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. There is a minor punctuation error in the third paragraph where a sentence is fragmented by a period before 'because'. Additionally, the phrase 'It would affect negatively the social life' is slightly awkward; 'It would negatively affect the social life' would be more natural. Despite these minor slips, your control over grammar is good, and your meaning is always clear. You have a solid foundation in sentence construction.
