Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this to show my concern about the possible closer of sports and leisure centre.

My family and I use this facility several times a week, my friends and I do gym workouts and swimming sessions, my younger brother take badminton classes every weekend. My family member mostly take yoga classes and other physical training sessions.

This sports club is playing significant role in everybody's life, this club is very affordable and promote healthy lifestyle for every age group, this centre is located in the heart of your town, so it is accessible for everybody.

There are several possible effect can be seen if this area will no longer available for public. Firstly, no more physical movement can lead to several health problems for the citizens, people not able to interact with each other which can lead to the social isolation. After the closer of this centre, people have to travel long distance to find similar facility, which can be time consuming and expensive.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope city council will reconsider this decision.

Your faithfully,

Simranjeet.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain how you and your family use the centre, why it is important, and the potential negative effects of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, instead of just listing activities, you could briefly describe the social atmosphere or the specific benefits of the classes. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Firstly' and 'After the closer of this centre' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and there are instances where sentence structure could be improved to enhance flow. For example, the second paragraph contains several comma splices where separate sentences should be used. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring proper punctuation between independent clauses would strengthen the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'accessible', 'social isolation', and 'physical training'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and form, such as 'possible closer' (should be 'closure') and 'playing significant role' (missing an article: 'a significant role'). Additionally, 'physical movement' is a slightly unnatural collocation in this context. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you are using the correct word forms (nouns vs. verbs). The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('my younger brother take' instead of 'takes'), missing articles ('in heart of your town'), and punctuation errors like comma splices. While your meaning is always clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, pay closer attention to basic subject-verb agreement and ensure that you are not joining independent clauses with only a comma.
