Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

Hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing this letter to bring to your notice the importance of our sports and leisure centre which is a crucial part of our lives.

We utilise the centre for our extra curricular activities like various sports, recreactional activities and elder of our families spent some leisure time by having refreshments and quality time with their friends.

considering the fact the center is an important part of our day and lives, it is also a cruical aspect of our local community as it's a place where the community get together as family to address community issues, development suggestions also celebrating various festivals and fests.

If we decide to close down the centre it will impact our communities mental as well as physical health, as kids won't have place to play and do would shift to the digital platforms which are at times harmful for their mind and due to lack of physical activity their physical health also will be at risk. Having said that even the elders will be frustrated and depressed with no place to go after their tiring day to find peace or socialise with friends.

Thus, I would like to request you to reconsider the proposal of closing the sports and leisure centre.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to hearing from you.

Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You explained how your family uses the centre, why it is important for the community, and the negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are fully developed; for instance, you could have provided a specific example of a 'community issue' or 'festival' to make your argument more persuasive and concrete. Overall, the response is well-focused and clearly communicates your position throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'considering the fact' and 'having said that', to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that transitions between sentences are smoother. Some sentences, particularly in the third paragraph, feel slightly disjointed. Improving the variety of your cohesive markers would elevate the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'recreational activities', 'crucial', and 'reconsider the proposal'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'recreactional' and 'cruical', which slightly distract the reader. Additionally, some word choices are a bit repetitive or imprecise, such as 'do would shift' (which seems to be a typo for 'they would shift'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and ensure careful proofreading to eliminate minor spelling slips that could otherwise be avoided.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'elder of our families spent' (should be 'elders in our families spend') and 'community get together' (should be 'community gets together'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing commas that would help clarify your sentence structure. You have attempted complex sentences, but they occasionally contain errors that slightly impede the flow. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will help you achieve a higher score.
