Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to explain the importance of the sports and leisure centre in our day to day lifestyle.
We use centre for a range of activities. Me and my friends use the sports centre to play tennis and hockey. Not only it helps us stay fit-as-fiddle but also allows us to relax through its weekends meditation camp. Moreover, families use it for recreational activities such as swimming and dancing.
The sports and leisure centre is crucial for the development of the local community because it helps them collaborate and make new friends through its various activities such as free art and dance classes. It helps people learn about different cultures and traditions as different communities organize their cultural events and invite all the residents of the area.
The centre plays a vital role in keeping the local people healthy. Its free walk in medical camp provides indispensable support to elderly residents. Additionally, young generation use it for outdoor physical activities. Shutting down the operations may result in prevalent obesity among the residents.
Hoping for prompt consideration.
Yours faithfully,
Achin Pal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain how you use the centre (tennis, hockey, meditation), why it is important for the community (social cohesion, cultural exchange), and the potential negative effects of its closure (obesity, lack of support for the elderly). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. Ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing a clear and logical argument for keeping the facility open. The structure is sound, and the purpose of the letter is established immediately in the opening paragraph.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Shutting down the operations' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. While the flow is generally smooth, the transition between the introduction and the first body paragraph could be slightly more refined to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with precision. Phrases like 'indispensable support', 'recreational activities', and 'prompt consideration' are used effectively. There are some minor collocation issues, such as 'fit-as-fiddle' (which should be 'fit as a fiddle') and 'day to day lifestyle' (which is slightly redundant). However, these do not impede communication. You show an ability to use less common vocabulary, which is a positive sign for higher band scores. Focusing on more natural collocations will help elevate your writing further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'Me and my friends' (should be 'My friends and I') and 'Not only it helps us' (should be 'Not only does it help us'). Additionally, there are minor article omissions, such as 'use centre' (should be 'use the centre') and 'young generation' (should be 'the young generation'). Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. The punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
