Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am writing this letter to the local council to stop the closure of sports and leisure centre. As there are plenty of benefits of centre like I and my dear ones go to this centre for outing. Because we do not have acccess to any other outdoor place, the intiative to shut down this centre must be reconsider.
The sport centre is not only beneficial for chilren but also used by senior citizens of our locality since the area is crowded and congested there is no grenery but when people visit this centre they enjoy trees and keep them fit.
Even if the closure is for the betterment, its advantages can not be overlooked because youngsters will only be restricted to their houses which will turn our to be rude behaviour. Moreover, older geneation may not another suitable place and get mentally upset.
I hope local council will reconsider their decision before taking any strict acion.
your sincerely,
Arsh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You explain how you use the centre, why it is important for the community, and the potential negative effects of its closure. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention that you and your family use the centre for 'outing', you could have provided more specific details about the activities you engage in. Similarly, the explanation of the effects of closure is a bit brief. To achieve a higher band, ensure that each point is expanded with more descriptive detail and clear, logical reasoning to fully satisfy the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is generally coherent, and the progression of ideas is logical. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'Even if' to connect your thoughts. However, the paragraphing is somewhat inconsistent, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the overall structure would benefit from more sophisticated signposting to guide the reader through your arguments more smoothly. Ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme to improve the overall readability of your letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'locality', 'congested', and 'betterment'. However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word choice, such as 'turn our to be rude behaviour' and 'older geneation may not another suitable place'. There are also some spelling errors, such as 'acccess', 'intiative', 'chilren', 'grenery', and 'acion'. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and ensure you proofread your work to eliminate basic spelling mistakes that detract from the professional tone of a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, such as missing articles ('the sports and leisure centre'), incorrect verb forms ('must be reconsider'), and missing words ('may not [have] another suitable place'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the salutation and closing. To reach a higher band, you need to increase the frequency of error-free sentences and pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, which are essential for formal written English.
