Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am a resident of southern hamilton for more than twenty years. Therefore my family and I have been using the local facilities for years. A news about closing down of the sports and leisure centre has made me writing this letter. In this letter I like to address the difficulties we would face if this decision will be made.
I regularly go to badminton games with my friends for 2 years and i am now practically for an international tournament which will be held in couple of months. My parents also use the gymnasium every morning and my little brother use to learn skating for his upcoming competition in his school on the Sports Day.
Local community has been using this centre on daily basis as it has library and computer services. University students use computers for their assignments and project works. This cocal community centre provides wide range of services to the local community.
If the centre will shut down, many people will be unemployed such as gym and swimming coaches, yoga instructor, management and watchmen. Moreover, local residents will face the problem if they have to go yo another city or area to get those facilities. It can be adverse effect on locals.
Thank you for considering my request and hope to hear a good response from you soon in favour of local people.
Yours faithfully
Alvina Panchal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain how you and your family use the centre, the importance of the facility to the community, and the potential negative consequences of its closure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a local council. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, while you mention the impact on staff, you could briefly elaborate on the social isolation that might affect elderly residents if the centre were to close. Overall, the response is well-focused and meets all requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor mechanical errors in referencing and sentence structure. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that pronouns clearly refer back to their intended nouns to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'resident', 'facilities', 'tournament', and 'adverse effect'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'A news about closing down' (should be 'The news of the closure') and 'practically for an international tournament' (should be 'practicing for'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations. Expanding your vocabulary to include more topic-specific collocations would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and articles, such as 'I am a resident... for more than twenty years' (should be 'have been'), 'my little brother use to learn' (should be 'uses'), and 'It can be adverse effect' (should be 'It could have an adverse effect'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
